It’s year since we were in Venice celebrating our wedding with friends and family. The day was packed with great events and anecdotes. On this story I’d like to focus on one of those highlights that contributed to making our wedding experience unique.
It happened during the walk from GranCaffè Quadri in St Mark’s square where we were decided to gather with friends for an ‘aperitive’ before making the way to the Danieli’s hotel where we were having the reception.
Emma and I were walking along very excited about the events happened so far: the Chapel, the Gondola journey to St Marks, the stroll along Venice little streets and the aperitif at Caffè Quadri.
As we were passing in front of the ‘Basilica de St Mark’ and the ‘Palazzio Ducale’ we were quietly engaging into conversation with our friends, the photographer was taking some photos, and suddenly we spotted the Hare Krishna with their usual stereotypical costumes, drums and music… Oh dear, they are not coming towards us, they would not expect us to dance with them as we are celebrating our wedding!
But yes, as it happened, a young lad from the Hare Krishna took Emma away to dance along the music. A young lady also grabbed me into the group and in less than a few second we were staging the best of ourselves at the sound of Krishna music in front of the Palace Ducale in the world’s most tourist and most photographed square: St Mark’s.
The crowds all thought this was great and made for amazing photos and they circled us as we danced. In less than a minute every tourist round us was taking photos of us dancing with the Hare Krishna. We actually got a bit carried away when our friends were also taken in to dance. Suddenly nearly everyone from the group was dancing: Mel and Karl from New Zealand, Emma’s colleagues from Paris, my friends from the UK and Spain and even my mom and dad were dancing along with the Hare Krishna. It was truly a scene deserving immortalisation. For a moment I missed my own camera.

We had an extraordinary time dancing along with everyone. Members of the public also came in to dance. I don’t think I have ever been in a situation before where I was so much the focal centre of attention. Hundreds of photos were at Emma and I!! What a surreal situation! I thought, well I think we all thought it was!
One of our friends at the wedding, Leana, told us that we were blessed for having been dancing with the Hare Krishna on our wedding day in Venice. A year later I am starting to believe she was right, as we were blessed with the birth of our first baby girl. We actually really feel blessed.
Soon it was time to leave the dancing ceremony in the mythical St. Mark’s Square to head for the Danieli hotel for the aperitif reception before dinner. As we left the Hare Krishna group, they had began to align everyone into a long chain and everyone was dancing in the chain swinging and smiling. It really was great to see everyone having a really good time on our wedding day.
When we arrived at the Danieli’s, everyone was talking about it. Those that had arrived first at the hotel and had missed the dancing part at St. Mark’s were now being told by the others. This specific event really added positive connotation to our entire wedding experience that day. Whatever the religion and whatever the everyone’s beliefs, morals and religious beliefs, for a moment I wished that all religions practised similar habits. I like to think that this world would then be different.
The best of all was having our friends and family having a really good time, the amazing colorful photos that were taken, and the great feeling of fulfillment, relaxed and laid back everyone seemed to have.
Hope you liked the photos and that after reading this you may be tempted more to the idea of getting married in Venice!
